Biographical statement

Marianne Kearney is an aid worker and former journalist who reported from South-East Asia, and South Asia, for almost a decade, covering various communal, ethnic and separatist conflicts. She has experience working as a communications expert in post-conflict, journalism and democracy programmes, and health promotions projects in Timor -Leste and Indonesia.

The focus of her thesis is how it was that previously insignificant, or allegedly non-existent ethnic identities became an organising framework for violence in the 2006 crisis, and how salient these identities are today. If these ethnic identities were constructed to mobilise violence, then how do these identities articulate with other identities, such as gang and political identities after 2006.
