In essays, books, blogs, magazines, petitions, and demonstrations, Vietnamese citizens in recent years have been publicly debating and criticizing government agencies, policies, and the ruling Communist Party. This seminar analyzes aspects of this political ferment and authorities’ reactions, which have been a mixture of responsiveness, toleration, and repression.

Ben Kerkvliet’s publications include 8The Power of Everyday Politics: How Vietnamese Peasants Transformed National Policy* (Cornell University Press, 2005). He is an emeritus professor at the Australian National University and an affiliate graduate faculty member at the University of Hawai’i.
