What are the emerging remedies to the pathologies of populism? Four authors of four new books reflect on how opposition parties, activist groups, global institutions and new political alliances contest the rise of the radical right and offer alternatives for democratic transformation.
Panellists include:
Walden Bello is Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York. He is the author of more than twenty books, including Deglobalization, Capitalism’s Last Stand, Dilemmas of Domination, and most recently, Counter-Revolutions: The Global Rise of the Far Right (2019, Fernwood Publishing).
Nicole Curato is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at the University of Canberra. She is author of the book Democracy in a Time of Misery: From Spectacular Tragedy to Deliberative Action (2019, Oxford University Press).
Paul Kenny is an Associate Professor, and Head of the Department of Political and Social Change at ANU. He is the author of the book Populism and Patronage: Why Populists Win Elections in India, Asia, and Beyond (2017, Oxford University Press)
Annika Werner is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Politics and International Relations at ANU. She is the author of the book International Populism: Radical Right in the European Parliament (with Duncan McDonnel. 2019, Hurst).
